Shenandoah Valley Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa will meet Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Northlawn Dining Hall at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. Leah Lilly, an eighth-grader at Wilbur S. Pence Middle School and Amy Rhodes, a junior at Buffalo Gap High School, were participants in V.F.W. Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy Essay contests, respectively. Lilly is the daughter of Todd and Dena Lilly, of Bridgewater. Rhodes is the daughter of Gene and Tracy Fulk, of Mount Solon. Both writers were presented with a flag, certificate and two $50 checks from the Mount Solon V.F.W. Post 3136 Ladies Auxiliary and the Mount Solon V.F.W. Post 3136.
Doug Wine was honored as Dayton Ruritan Club’s Outstanding Member of the Year. Steve Daner presents the award. Wine “exercises his professionalism and wise council by advising on many Ruritan functions,” according to the club’s press release. He has a 40-year Perfect Attendance record, has served as president twice and also been honored twice as an outstanding member.
The Rotary Club of Bridgewater met on Tuesday evenings during January at Maple Terrace, a part of Bridgewater Retirement Community. President Whit Menefee called the meetings to order. Marvin Smith led the songs and Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Carlyle Whitelow offered the invocation.
At the regular monthly board of directors meeting, Pam Keystone gave the treasurer’s report. Minutes of the December meeting, prepared by Sally Jane Conner, were approved. Plans for the Rotary Family Valentine Banquet were finalized.
The board of directors chairperson met with their committees to review the past six months and discuss upcoming plans for the next six months of the Rotary year.
The club co-sponsored a blood mobile drive with the Wells Fargo Bank in Bridgewater. Another event is being planned in May at Wells Fargo Bank. The spaghetti supper will be March 20 at TAHS.

Turner Ashby High School students Josie Hawkins and Mikayla Bailey attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar in December at Virginia Tech.
A.C. Gray, a world traveler with long careers with the United States Air Force and the American Red Cross spoke about his experiences, including being dispatched to various disasters worldwide. He served as a Peace Corps diplomat and traveled some 86 countries.
Rotarian Robert McFadden spoke about his traveling experiences to Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. He has made more 22 trips to the park. He is a member of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
The Bridgewater Ruritan Club met Feb. 6 at Turner Ashby High School with President Dennis Rawley presiding. Charles
Wright led in singing one verse of “America” and Chaplain Kelly Lane gave the invocation for the meeting and the meal served by the Bridgewater Ruriteens. Guests were District Governor John Case and District Lt. Governor Lori Ryan.
President Rawley, who attended the national convention, reported on several changes, including dues and meeting dates. He also announced that Ruritan Rachel Leweke was named National Ruriteen of the Year.
In other business, Ralph Newman was granted an Emeritus status. Order forms were distributed for the annual Florida Citrus Fruit Sale. Orders are to be turned in at the March meeting and fruit will be available on March 16.
Phil and Sue Hutchinson spoke about the Challenger Baseball Program, which they started in 2001. There is a junior division for ages 5-12 and a senior division for ages 13-graduation or age 21. Fifty volunteers assist.
The March 5 meeting will be at Turner Ashby High School at 7 p.m.
The West Rockingham Ruritan Club met Feb. 13 at the Mount Clinton United Methodist Church. President David Weaver welcomed members and guests after a wonderful meal prepared by ladies from the Mt. Horeb Church.
Guest speakers were Dan Dalrymple and Robert Showalter, leaders of Mount Clinton Boy Scout Troop No. 83. The club has sponsored the troop for nearly 51 years. Scout Hunter Morton gave a breakdown of what the troop has accomplished, its future plans and thanked members for their support.
Board minutes and the treasurer’s report were given, as well as an update on the Ruritan Club T-shirts sale. Gun raffle tickets will be available to sell during the March turkey-oyster dinner. Andy Carrier will address any questions.
Craig Miller spoke on a recent environmental project on his farm, and how local residential subdivisions may be able to help protect waterways.
President Weaver read a thank-you card from Bill Robinson, who is recovering from a knee replacement.
The guest speaker for March will be Nina Miller, who will talk about her recent trip to China.
Rockingham Luncheon Ruritan Club met Feb. 15. President Bruce Harvey called the meeting to order. The 2012 club objectives were approved. Vickie Heschl, club delegate, presented a report on the Ruritan National Convention. H. Ken Elkins was presented an Outstanding District Governor Award.
Board recommendations were made to determine the amount for providing flowers or memorials in the death of a member, and to discontinue meetings at Bridgewater Retirement Community and meet at Pano’s Restaurant.
Perry Marshman was appointed as the club’s national representative. The community workshop is March 22 at the Broadway Rescue Squad. There will be no meal served.
Committee reports were as follow: Finance has turned in the required form to work at the Red Front Hot Dog Stand. A naturalization ceremony was held Jan. 9, and the next one is scheduled for March 19. A picnic will be held this year with an opportunity to purchase club shirts. The club received recognition at the Lincoln Observance for mowing the grounds. Rudy Bears will be picked up in March for distribution. Community service reports will be due to the District Governor Sept 19.
Dr. Chris Arndt presented a program on Abraham Lincoln.
The next meeting is March 21 at Pano’s.
