Letter Was Right, Critics Are Wrong

Posted: February 8, 2012

In response to my recent letter, Bob Bersson seems to insinuate that I am Nazi-like (“Calling Another Religion Sinful Is Dangerous,” Jan. 25).

Though he did not use the Nazi term, it appears that he meant that with the reference to the holocaust. As for him and others who think like him, their linking arms with Islam is based on political agendas. In contrast, politics played no role in my letter.

The Kohns apparently disagree with the message of Jesus Christ, who stated that He was the only way to God the Father and eternal life (“Offensive Letter Should Not Have Been Printed,” Jan. 25).

Jesus said we are to have no other gods beside the Lord God. That includes Allah. Jesus is God’s only begotten Son, a doctrine that Islam hates. Numerous letters to the editor have proclaimed Christ’s gospel or denounced Islam. I offer no apology for doing both.

Editorials and letters to the editor are used to open areas for conversations and arguable ideas.  The belief expoused by R. W. Silling is not arguable.  His beliefs are not open to discussion and can lead to no useful purpose other than the expression of a belief he is not willing to argue.  The expousal of a belief typically cannot be discussed using reason.  People don't compromise or become open to new ideas when they are expousing a belief, such as their religion.

The editorial is the place for reasonable arguments (meaning those which can be expored using reason, instead of belief).  Why can't the DN-R understand that and quit printing these kinds of letters?

It seems the main purpose for the DN-R's editorial page is to give people a space to fight and throw mud at each other.  To think that someone would use their religious beliefs in this way!  Let's move on to better topics.

RW, did it ever occur to you that not everyone believes the Bible is the true word of God and that what you claim Jesus said perhaps was not said? As usual, you support any religion as long as it's yours.

Are we really going there again really??!!?? Okay fine. Silling your understanding of Islam and prejudice against it is based on your brainwashing my the media and the fearmongering of politicians - to keep you in line.  Maybe you should take the time and before you make blanket statements about a religion - any religion - you should first understand it.  There are actually many many similarities to Islam and a wide variety of Christian religions.

When you base a letter and opinion and preach on it without knowledge of what it is you are speaking of - then yes - your letter and the thought process behind it is dangerous.

If you disagree with a religions fundamental values and theology okay that is your right. However it is not your right to dehumanize, devalue and demonize that religion and the people who practice it.

Islam is a very old and decent religion - not my religion - and it has its members who create extremists groups who unfortunately get the most publicity and cause the most harm.

Maybe your "God" allows his people to judge others but mine does not - it is for Him and Him alone to judge.

Re2:  Your reasons for not liking Silling's letter are some  the same reasons I don't like Obama!

Re 1: Oh please.  I did not like Silling's letter because it was arrogant and ridiculous.  There are almost 7 billion people in the world, and every single one that has religious convictions believes theirs is the "right" one.  Does Silling think himself special in some way?  (And using the fact that the Bible says its religion is the "chosen one" as justification that Christianity is the only true religion is like me proclaiming myself ruler of the universe, and using that proclamation as proof.)

RW:  The progressive left did not like your letter because The Grand Imam, Kommrade Barack Hussein Obama, is their Lord and King, their Messiah so to speak!
